If you look around, you will find three types of people; those who hate their work and complain profoundly, those who see work as a paycheck and nothing more neither are they looking for more, and lastly, those who are passionate about their work and cherish each moment. The third kind of people are rare, but they do exist. They are born to lead and make an impact. This group of people usually bear the brunt of changing the world for the better. It generally includes renowned entrepreneurs, business tycoons, researchers, innovators, and various experts. But sometimes it includes people who have a noble mission for which they contribute their level best.
Kendrick Tilghman is one such person who surely falls into the third category of people. He is a dedicated DJ, commonly known as DJ 5 Starr, and runs his own company with the name 5 Starr Enterprise. Being a graduate in computer and engineering, with an MBA degree, he is not just any DJ. The focus of his company is to mix his art of DJing with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.
Now that is unique and unheard of as who would have ever thought of mixing DJing with mathematics? But the fact remains, Kendrick is creating wonders each day by spreading the awareness of STEM education and helping young minds learn STEM-related stuff in a fun and interesting manner.
While the company also provides its services as a master of ceremonies as a professional DJ for entertainment, the focus is on weddings, corporate affairs, health fairs, educational events, conferences, festivals, and family functions.
Kendrick’s efforts to spread the awareness of STEM education in his community are noteworthy as they aim to reduce the racial disparity in the workforce environment of America. African Americans along with other minorities and women are representing a very small percentage of STEM-related jobs which he aims to change in the future.
He is rightfully known as the number one STEM DJ and calls himself a DJpreneur. He describes his success in the following words,
“Definity feels like I am living a dream. Year 11 of a 20-year plan. Started with a dream about the same energy I saw/felt for basketball, to be for Mathematics. I wanted to create an organization that put the WOW in STEM (science, technology, engineering & mathematics) We started with edutainment workshops, then an intro to a teachers unit plan, the exhibits for STEM fairs, then finally as an educational resource for in-person learning.”
Today, he is known for his commendable services to promote STEM using his DJing skills. There is no denying the fact that the man is a star.
